Choosing the best Google Docs resume template

For many of us, Google Docs is our go-to for anything and everything we need to write down — whether that’s a college paper, meeting notes, or just keeping track of ideas. If you’re preparing to begin a job search, chances are, it’s where you’ll turn for creating your resume, too. Luckily, you don’t need to start from scratch, because Google Docs provides some great resume templates! You can use these to whip up a polished, professional-looking resume in no time, and best of all, they’re totally free. 

To get started, open up Google Docs and click on Template Gallery in the top right corner. You’ll see a default list of templates under the General tab, and then you can scroll down to find Resumes

Before we dive into our favorite templates, here are a few tips to keep in mind when formatting a resume. 

  • Choose a readable, straightforward font. Readability is more important than flair — make sure your font doesn’t distract from the content of your resume. Stay away from anything too fancy, silly, or overly stylized. 
  • Keep your font size standard. The bulk of your resume content should be 10-point at the smallest, and 12-point at the highest. Your name and section headers can be larger (but not too large).  
  • Use color judiciously. Pops of color can call attention to key information and help your resume stand out. Just don’t go overboard — stick to a single color palette and make sure that it’s not so light or bright that it’s difficult to read. 
  • Avoid paragraphs of text. Use bullets and numbering to break your content into easily-digestible chunks. Paragraphs and long sentences can cause your reader to lose interest, so keep it short and sweet! 

Now, let’s take a look at a few resume templates from Google Docs that strike just the right balance of stylish and businesslike.

The Serif template is one of our go-tos because of its smart formatting — the two-column layout provides more room for additional information without becoming messy or crowded. There’s plenty of room for extra details about your projects, skills, and awards. This is a great choice if you’d like to include lots of context on your professional history!

The straightforward yet elegant layout and splash of color make the Spearmint template a great choice. The format is logical, but not dull, and the bright green color will certainly catch the eye of readers. This template will work well if you want to highlight your skills upfront — and this section can also be substituted for a summary or personal statement. 

Modern Writer

We love the Modern Writer template for its sleek design, clean spacing, and fun pop of color. It’s just enough personality without being distracting. If the pink — or any other part of the design — isn’t working for you, you can always customize it! 

Remember, the style of your resume is important, but the content should speak for itself. Keep the formatting simple, polished, and professional, and focus your attention on crafting a stellar showcase of your professional history.
